Hello! my name is Regann Fishell and I am a Fourth-year Studio art and Physics double major at Grinnell College, and I have been trying to explore as many mediums and skills as possible before I graduate. Currently I work as the Editor-in-Chief for the Grinnell Review, my college’s biannual literary publication, and as the treasurer and digital archivist for the Basement Gallery, the student run art gallery on campus.
Through my work I try to mix a variety of textures as I explore my relationships with domestic home-life and nostalgia. I work with thrifted fabrics that I find in my communities in order to communicate the well-worn feeling of a loved piece of clothing. Sustainability runs deep in my practice as I incorporate found-objects in many of my pieces, from toys in the dumpster to hoodies found on the side of the road. Furthermore, I hang onto small leftover scraps and reuse as many materials as I can through other artworks. My pieces remain on the smaller side and quite intimate, inviting the viewer to reflect on their own childhood memories and experiences.
Fabric often reminds me of my own childhood, and the innocence found in learning to sew for the first time. My stitches always remain a little messy, a characterization of my younger self wanting to hastily move from one step to the next. My mother kept an extensive sewing room, and this love of fabric has followed me into adulthood, as I seek out pieces to both add to my collection and work with, as I typically find myself grabbing fabrics she would have had at the time.
